The fight over the name of NFL team the Washington Redskins has turned a major corner. The trademark for the team’s name has been canceled. The U.S. Patents and Trademark Office ruled that the trademark had to be canceled because the name disparaged Native Americans. Native Americans view the term “redskins” as derogatory.
While this doesn’t mean the team must change their name, it means people and organizations will be able to use the term and logo of the football team without threat of legal action from the sports franchise. That is horrible for the team because that means the NFL team will take a huge hit in the finance department.
